Today is gonna be so hard...
… but so very worth it. It’s my official debut to the Toronto stage making this the third country I’ve been honoured the opportunity to play an official gig in (I do my thing wherever I go). I’ve torn up the stage a couple times in the last year plus that I’ve been here but this is the first me-centric thing and I’m excited.
But I’ve got a lot of work to do. Courtesy of the most disorganised promoter I’ve ever worked with, I’ve got to run around ALL DAY tomorrow trying to score some equipment and I’ve got to carry my guitar in the event that he DOES get me an amp (seriously, I’m playing at a lounge with NO amps). I’ve got waaay too much to do tomorrow and I’m not looking forward to it.
Still, being back on stage again will be so worth it. So here’s the rundown of what my set tomorrow will consist of:
- Some jams from invinciblemusic that you know and love
- A brand new track that I’m debuting from The Phoebe EP
- Me, potentially, on tambourine AND guitar duty (if Mr. Man gets me an amp)
- The mighty Jason Florentino on lead guitar (so worth it)
- My sweet outfit that Alex has been working on for me
- Video duty by the fantastic Meghan!
- Photo duty by Aanchal as well as, from what I gather, Arslan AND Amanda
Should be fun times. Wish me luck!

I’m so fucking glad I waited. Yay!!!And apparently that’s next month? That’ll be perfect timing because my current phone contract expires then. We’ll see if their plans are any good though otherwise I will have to go to Rogers.
A lot of this same excitement going around, huh (or as they say here in Canada, “eh”)? I may just be re-upping my contract.

Bus Stop Circus?
Every once in a while when I’m waiting for my bus I decide to instead of waiting 20 minutes for my regular bus I decide to take a different one that’s at that moment sitting at the bus terminal in front of me. I think “hey, This one says University. I’ll take my chances and take this one instead even though I have no idea where it goes.” BIGGEST MISTAKE EVER!! Then I’m stuck on a bus that takes an extra half hour driving through residential areas far away from where I want to be. Now I’ve ended up studying until it’s dark outside and I’m too scared to take the bus home. UGH.
Thanks for this, Victoria! Incidentally, this is reminiscent of my time in Costa Rica. Though I do pull this stunt here in Toronto, from time to time, with similar results. But when you’ve been lost in Costa Rica, it’s hard to get scared about York Region.

Drawing a character of two random girls you meet on the street then leaving it on their windshield hoping they want to hang out sometime doesn’t work…or does it?When I was 18, an adorable hippie skateboarder type made me an origami box with a little note inside and gave it to me on the bus. We dated for 3 months. Out of the box approaches almost always work. And if the object of attention doesn’t get it, they are probably uptight and boring.
Completely agree… it’s adorable and original, not to mention totally flattering.
Totally inapplicable to me here. Perhaps back home in Cayman, but here in Toronto, not only does no one I know drive but I also go to art school. You know, where EVERYONE can draw reasonably well and slick illustrations are “the norm”. Origami, however, seems to be a viable option…
P.S. True Story: I gave out free sketches on my last day at work and one girl I gave one to added me on Facebook. Turns out we have mutual friends :)

Back to Toronto Discoveries
- 1. Mom and Dad’s (and Al La Kebab’s) home cooking has spoilt me terribly. I’m so unmotivated to get in the kitchen and do anything (I finally got around to doing a pot of rice).
- Toronto is too big. It freaks me out to get on the subway (first of all, because I’m used to driving) and look around and see so people who are a) white and b) unknown or unfamiliar to me. Also, the substitution of Filipinos for Chinese as the local staple Asians is slightly rattling.
- The streets are a dangerous place to be on multiple levels. Mind you, the crime level in Cayman has skyrocketed to unnerving levels in the last year but Toronto drivers are, quite frankly, total douchebags. Caymanian drivers are the friendliest I’ve EVER encountered in all my travels. Also, how you goin’ charge people for parking? EIGHT DOLLARS AN HOUR??
- Busy gives me the heebie-jeebies. I was walking down Dundas Street yesterday and I found myself just eerily uncomfortable with the number of people just in my peripherals. It’s too much of a sensory overload.
- It’s hard to consider this place home. It’s day four and I still haven’t even made an attempt to unpack. Though, to be fair, I do suspect the copious hours of playing Worms, online with Jeremy and Rhian back home, may have contributed to that.

Goodbye: Cayman Islands Style
In 8 short hours, I’ll be on a plane flying 5000 miles back up the face of the earth to the “top of the world”. Suckfest 2009.
While I can’t wait to see some of my friends again and get back to city life, I’m really kind of anxious about leaving home this time. I don’t get homesick but it’s been a pretty great summer! Mind you, I think I accomplished about 2/10+ things on my to-do list but who cares? I’ve had a great time this summer, hanging out with old friends and taking in the sun, sea and sand.
Anyhoo. Toodloo, sunshine. Summertime Champion out.
